St Bega's Way starts at St Bees Priory in the village of St Bees on the Cumbrian coast. The walk is designed to take three days, which is a good pace for those who are of average fitness. No doubt the super-fit could do it in a single day, but they would miss a lot of its charm.

The first day crosses the coastal plain and climbs the pleasant hill of Dent, with its excellent views along the coastline, ending at the village of Ennerdale Bridge where there are inns and other accommodation.

The second day, probably the most strenuous, takes us along the north shore of Ennerdale Water, and up onto the flank of Brandreth, descending to Borrowdale from the summit of the Honister Pass.

Finally the third day takes us by the side of the River Derwent and Derwentwater to Portinscale, up to some splendid views of Bassenthwaite Lake and beyond, and then down passing near the Osprey Watch viewpoint. The last stretch brings us through the grounds of Mirehouse to the ancient church of St Bega on the shore of the lake.

Please note that only a few short sections of the route are suitable for wheelchair users.

St Bees has a Rail Station with trains from Carlisle or Barrow-in-Furness. St Bega's doesn't even have a tarmacked-road! However, busses pass on the A591 at Mirehouse, so an extra half-mile back to the road will get you on your way home.
